Those Pesky Rodents
Most home builders will tell you that new construction slows down during the winter months. That trend, unfortunately, doesn’t extend to the animals that live around your home. In fact, it’s during the winter that some of those pesky critters really settle in, especially in your chimney.
You, or someone you know, probably have a story about sitting quietly by the fireplace when an insistent scratching sound begins. You may sit there for a few minutes hoping it just stops. But then the sound seems to shift, suddenly coming from a different area. That gets your attention. You may bang on the nearby walls a few times, which may cause the sound to stop for a brief time. Five or ten minutes later, however, the sound resumes. And now you’re irritated.
Could it be a mouse or a chipmunk? Perhaps it’s something larger like a squirrel, raccoon, or possum. Some birds may have built a nest. In any case, you probably have dirty animals that are now living in your home.
The bottom line, unfortunately, is this: You may have the most spotless chimney in the tri-state area, but when an animal decides to make it its home, you’ve got a choice to make. You can either let it continue to live there, dropping feces and procreating, or you can call an expert who will take steps to have the nuisance removed. I know the choice I’d make.
